Sapphires can be extracted from both underground mining and open-pit mining methods. The mined gravel is washed with water through a "wash plant" so that the sapphires can be extracted from the pulsator which shakes the gravel as the water passes over it. Sapphires gravitate to the bottom and are collected at the end of the wash cycle.

Sapphire Preforming

Sapphires that are assessed by Rod as cuttable quality and that will yield over a carat weight are "preformed" into the final cut shape and size. When preforming Rod takes into account the colour and orientation of the rough material to reveal the best marketable quality gem while yielding the largest size possible.

Sapphire Final Cutting and Polishing

Australian Sapphires Pty Ltd works with Thai cutting partners to finish the final cutting and polishing of our sapphires. We have a quality assurance process in place with a "man on the ground" in Thailand who inspects cut gems for quality and marketability before returning them to Australia.
